For the first counselling session, you will see the counsellor who will take all the information from the client's name, their contact along with the other demographic details. After this, the client is usually asked what the person is expecting from the counselling or the reason for visiting. If the client is not able to actually figure out and is just confused, he/she is helped through the sessions to figure out the problem. The counsellor discusses the outline or the framework of the sessions, setting up the schedule. Length, timing and days of the sessions will be settled. You will be told about the terms which will be applied to the sessions including confidentiality. Payments will also be discussed and will be fixed. All this discussion will provide a secure and confidential agreement about the terms between both, the client and the counsellor.
After all of these first sessions are mostly used to build a rapport between the counsellor and the client. The counsellor makes sure that the client understands the terms of the upcoming sessions, and all, while the client tries two things. Firstly, to agree to the agreement terms of the sessions and secondly, if he could trust the counsellor and would be helped in the direction he needs to be helped.
Counselling or seeing a psychologist should be made as normal as it is to see a doctor. People usually seek help when they are not even able to work out their daily lives. But before doing so, check the qualifications of the person you are planning to see. And when you walk in, do not expect it to a magic. Give it a try for 2 or 3 sessions and ask yourself if you feel better in any way. You also need to find the right person or here as I say counsellor for you, which might be time taking but once you find it, it will help you in all aspects of life.
