Technically, Psychology is the study of mind, behaviour, verbal and non-verbal information. But it is also understood as a study of something which can help those in the discipline to read the mind of others and understand or read what is unsaid. It is not purely false, neither purely true. It does help those who study psychology to understand the underlying processes but it is not like they read your mind, they only read what you say, feel or show. It not out of nowhere. Psychology has many aspects to it. It a science that deals with human brain and behaviour and tries to make sense of an individual’s behaviour and of those around him, so that he has a better understanding of the environment.
Lets try to understand the same in the language of non-psychologists and prepare ourselves to answer the question “what does psychology even do?"
Psychology now doesn’t only allows us to be conscious of our patterns and behaviours that we do unintentionally or without even knowing but also helps us to understand the “why” to it, along with the how and when it became a habit and how can it be modified or left or how can something new be added to a person’s life. It is also something which helps to predict the behaviour of people. Psychology has a major impact on the emotional information intake and the kind of emotional responses we have to things around us which make us, us.
Psychology bridges the gap between a stimulus and a response by making us more mindful and careful while taking care that we process and deal with things instead of adapting maladaptive coping strategies. It can even help us to build resilience (resilience refers to the ability of a human to bounce back to the normal functioning of life after they go through a traumatic or stressful event or instance).
